When you’re hiring a traffic management or roadworks contractor, you’ll often see references to “NHSS” standards. These aren’t just industry jargon, they’re your assurance of quality and safety. Understanding what NHSS means can help you choose the right partner and ensure your project runs smoothly and compliantly.

What Are NHSS Standards?

NHSS stands for National Highways Sector Schemes. These are quality management standards developed in partnership with the industry and approved by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS). Each scheme focuses on a specific area - for example, NHSS 12A/B covers high-speed works, while 12D relates to temporary traffic management on urban and rural roads. Contractors certified to these schemes have been independently assessed for their competence, training and processes.

Why They Matter to Your Project

Working with an NHSS-accredited company protects you from risk. It means the people on site are properly trained, the equipment meets required specifications, and all work is delivered in line with national guidelines. This reduces the chance of accidents, non-compliance penalties, and costly delays. In short, NHSS standards give you peace of mind that your contractor knows exactly what they’re doing.

At LRKTM LTD, our teams hold the full range of NHSS accreditations, including 12AB and 12D. And we also offer training in 12D.
